New Delhi, March 18

Over 25 shanties were gutted in a major fire that broke out in a Yamuna Khadar slum, an official of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said.

Eight fire tenders rushed to the spot as the police control room received a call about the fire breaking out on the bank of Yamuna Khadar shanties around 1.50 pm, the official said.

“The fire, which spread over more than 500 m area, was brought under control at 4.20 pm,” he added.

No casualty has been reported, he said.

As per some residents of the shanties, the fire was intentionally set to break the protest of some local farmers, who were protesting against the government for past few days.

During the incident, the enraged residents even started fighting with the fire fighters and tried to stop them from performing their duties. No fire fighter was injured, said police.

Thereafter, the angry residents came to ITO Road tried to block the traffic, but police presence foiled their attempt, added a senior police officer.
