New Delhi, October 13

The Delhi Rehri-Patri Congress, under the leadership of DPCC president Ajay Maken, today held dharnas outside all the 12 zonal offices of the MCDs and the headquarters of the NDMC, seeking implementation of the Street Vendors’ (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and for stopping harassment of the vendors.

Maken said due to the harassment by the AAP government, Delhi Police, the three BJP-ruled MCDs and the New Delhi Municipal Council, over five lakh street vendors are finding it difficult to ply their trade.

Maken said the Congress had introduced the Street Vendors Act in 2013, which was passed in 2014. According to the Act, rule had to be framed within six months for the settlement of the street vendors, and within one year, a scheme was to be prepared for the implementation of the Act, but the AAP government has failed to implement it.

He said when the Delhi HC was hearing his PIL on street vendors, the court asked the government and the BJP-ruled MCDs why they did not come out with a scheme for the full implementation of the Act.
