Chandigarh, April 30

A special CBI court today sentenced an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police to one year in jail in a graft case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. However, the court has granted him bail on the bail bond of Rs 30,000. ASI Swarn Singh was convicted yesterday by the court.

The ASI was caught on January 15, 2010, while taking Rs 1,000 bribe from a Dhanas resident Gulam Sabari, who was booked in an NDPS case for supplying drugs. The ASI was given the responsibility of freezing his property. However, the ASI struck a deal of Rs 5,000 to save him from the case.

The amount was to be paid in five different instalments. However, while paying one of the instalments of Rs 1,000, he was caught in a CBI trap. He was arrested from Sabari’s house where he had come to collect the amount.
