Five members of a family were killed when their car crashed into a tree near Wara Daraka village on the Kotkapura-Muktsar road this morning.

The deceased were identified as Gurdial Singh (53), his wife Bimla Rani (50), sons Harjinder Singh (28) and Ramesh Kumar (26), and granddaughter Aarti (13). Gurdial’s daughter Sunita (25) is under treatment at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot. The family hailed from Roadwali village in Jalalabad subdivision of Fazilka district.

The accident happened in the wee hours when the family, travelling in a Swift car, was on its way to Faridkot. According to the employees at a nearby petrol pump, the speeding car tried to avoid hitting a tree that had fallen on the road after being hit by a truck. However, the car rammed into a roadside tree and landed in a field.

Farmers working in the fields reached the spot and extricated the bodies.

Two killed in accidents

Barnala: A 17-year-old girl and a 26-year-old boy were killed in separate road mishaps in Barnala district on Saturday. Aarti was returning home after a morning walk when she was hit by a truck. She died on the spot. The truck driver fled. Gurpreet Singh of Chhiniwal Kalan village died after he lost control of his car and rammed it into a roadside tree near Thikriwal village in the wee hours.
