GADVASU gears up for Pashu Palan Mela

LUDHIANA: The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, will organise the two-day Pashu Palan Mela on March 24 and 25.

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, will organise the two-day Pashu Palan Mela on March 24 and 25.

GADVASU Vice-Chancellor Dr AS Nanda said: “Diversification is the core issue nowadays in agriculture and we will create awareness and encourage farmers to adopt livestock on scientific lines through this mela.” He said livestock was the best option for diversification.

Dr Nanda said diversification within the livestock enterprise was the need of the hour. Not only dairy farming, but fisheries, poultry, piggery and goat farming were good diversification options in livestock. The value addition of livestock products ensures better profitability in these professions. GADVASU is undertaking research to develop newer technologies in livestock. Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Regional Research Centres at different places of Punjab of vet varsity were also extending major services and inputs for enhancing the production from livestock, he said.

He said this mela would be based on the theme to encourage masses to adopt livestock in a professional manner. The slogan this time is: ‘Palo Pashu saleeke naal, Vatavaran di karo sambhal’.

He said the university would confer Chief Minister’’s Award in the field of dairy, fish, goat, poultry farming as well as pig farming in the mela. These awards have been funded by the CM to boost the livestock sector in the state and would consist of cash prize as well as citation and shawl. Dr Harish Kumar Verma, director of extension education, GADVASU, said the varsity’s best animals would be exhibited to motivate farmers to breed superior livestock by getting the improved germplasm from the university. Books on dairy farming, pig farming, goat farming and package of practices for animal husbandry and GADVASU magazine ‘Vigyanak Pashu Palan’ would be available.
