Udham Singh Nagar district is facing acute shortage of specialists due to the recent transfers carried by the Department of Health in October, during which around 16 doctors promoted as joint directors were transferred to different districts in Kumaon.

The transfers have created problems in Rudrapur hospital from where five doctors have been transferred. From Kashipur hospital, around nine doctors have been transferred, from Khatima one, from Kichha one.

After the transfer of eye surgeon Dr Uday Shankar from the Rudrapur Hospital , no operations are taking place.Further, Dr TK Pant’s (radiologist) transfer from the Kashipur hospital is affecting day-to-day work at the radiology department. The transfer of Dr RK Sundriyal (Orthopaedic) from Kashipur has also badly affected the orthopaedic department.

“We are unable to hold eye camps in the absence of an eye surgeon. Besides, Udham Singh Nagar district registers several accidental cases, but in the absence of an orthopaedic surgeon, several cases remain unattended,” said Pankaj Pandey, DM, Udham Singh Nagar.

He said that he had apprised the Principal Secretary, Health, Om Prakash, of the problem. “Most of the doctors have either been transferred to Champawat or Bageshwar. We are facing difficulty in running the national programmes,” added Pandey.
