Jammu, April 26

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) wasted lakhs of rupees in the purchase of “faulty” garbage containers, which have been dumped near the Jogi Gate area of the city.

Though it was a major lapse on the part of the previous JMC Commissioner during whose tenure tenders were floated for their purchase, but no action is being taken against the people involved in the purchase.

There is a major fault in the design of the containers and now they have been left to rust in the open. They are blocking the road, while residents in various localities are waiting for them to be placed in their areas.

Further, inaction of the JMC to lift garbage from various parts of the city is posing a major health hazard to residents and due to scarcity of containers in several localities the sanitary conditions are worsening.

“Funds are not spent in a proper way and the city looks like a huge garbage dump. As there is shortage of manpower and lack of coordination between the JMC and JDA, it seems there will be no immediate respite from the menace of solid waste dumps,” said Rakesh Kumar, a local resident.

Residents say that open garbage dumps have created health problems for them as flies and stray dogs flock these sites. Residents of various localities like Shastri Nagar, Nai Basti, Nanak Nagar, Channi Himmat, Janipur, and Talalb Tillo allege that they have approached the corporation for sanctioning containers for their areas, but their requests have been ignored.

The absence of containers in several localities is adding to the woes of people. It is not only the solid waste, but also the foul smell that is creating unpleasant experience for commuters who pass through these dumps, which dot the city, visited daily by thousands of tourists.
