Chandigarh, May 3

Get ready to pay for parking your vehicle at Panjab University from May 15 with the launching of e-rickshaws. The authorities will charge Rs 5 for a car and Rs 2 for a two-wheeler.

As per the plan, the e-rickshaw facility will be provided at two of the university gates from where the entry of outsiders’ vehicles is banned. The e-rickshaws will charge Rs 10 per student. The outsiders will have to park their vehicles at the university gates where e-rickshaws will be available for them.

PU Registrar Col GS Chadha said they were planning to start the e-rickshaw service on the campus from May 15.

Earlier, the deadline to start the e-rickshaw service was May 1 but the contractor who was allotted the work did not respond to the authorities. The university authorities have taken this initiative as a first step for making the campus vehicle-free, which was demanded by university students in a referendum conducted last year. During the first phase, 30 e-rickshaws will be stationed at the varsity gates and the bus shuttle service of the campus will also be increased for the convenience of the visitors.

It has been decided that from Gate No.3, the entry of the outsiders’ vehicles will be banned and on Gate No.1 and 2, parking lots will be constructed for commuters.
