PU for student poll on Aug 28

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University has proposed to the Chandigarh Police to hold the Panjab University Campus Students Council elections on August 28. However, all student parties objected to it today at a meeting chaired by DSP (Central) Satish Kumar stating that holidays were scheduled on the campus before the proposed date, which would adversely affect the voting percentage.

Panjab University has proposed to the Chandigarh Police to hold the Panjab University Campus Students Council elections on August 28. However, all student parties objected to it today at a meeting chaired by DSP (Central) Satish Kumar stating that holidays were scheduled on the campus before the proposed date, which would adversely affect the voting percentage. They suggested that the date should be advanced to August 26 for holding the council elections.

The DSP confirmed that the police had received the proposed date for the elections but the final decision was yet to be taken by the authorities. He said before finalising the date, they would ensure that there was no VVIP movement or any major event in the city on the proposed date.

At the meeting, the student parties were instructed to follow the Lyngdoh committee norms before the announcement of the elections.

PUSU wants check onfree trips, liquor

During the meeting, PUSU said there should be a check on party workers who organise movie shows and trips, and distribute liquor on the campus and issue disco passes to voters before the elections.

The DSP said if any complaint was received regarding this, action would be taken. However, it was difficult for the police to prove that students were taken on free trips or free lunch was organised for them by any party.

DSP warns student parties

The DSP warned the student parties that a list of student leaders against whom FIRs were registered in the past had been prepared and if they were found involved in any violence during the coming elections, strict action would be taken against them.
A list of vehicles belonging to student leaders had also been prepared by the police to keep a track on their movement during the elections.
