PU to have new attendance norms from next session

Taking stringent action against the students who submit fake medical certificates to overcome a shortage in attendance, the Panjab University Syndicate today framed new norms to punish violators. During a meeting today, the Syndicate unanimously approved that the student be debarred from appearing in the examination and in case they have already appeared in the exam and the fake medical certificate is detected later by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the student’s result will be cancelled.

The meeting of the PU Syndicate was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover. The fresh norms will be sent to the Senate for its final nod. The Senate meeting is scheduled for March 26. After approval from the Senate, the norms for attendance will be included in the PU calendar which will be implemented from the 2017-18 academic session.

As per the new norms, the students will not be allowed to attend classes from the next semester in case they are found submitting fake medical certificates.

Records of the university reveal that at present, there are no norms. As a result, even if any fake medical certificate is detected by the CMO, the authorities are not able to take any action against the erring students.

The authorities also fixed norms for medical leave which a student can avail in case of any untoward incident in the family or if the student has health issues. As per the new proposal, the students can avail of sick leave for 10 days, 10 casual leaves in case of a death in the family, and a leave of five days in case some close family member has some health issues. In case of pregnancy, one-month leave will be allowed and in case of medical termination of pregnancy, a leave of 15 days will be granted.

The university proposed an amendment in the existing attendance norms. Normally, relaxation in attendance norms is given to the students admitted under the sports category. As per the new rules, sportspersons are not required to fulfill 75 per cent attendance requirement in the classroom, but will have to fulfill the ground attendance of 75 per cent.
