Chandigarh, August 31

The first phase of the street vendors' survey, which started on July 19, has been completed. According to a report of the survey, there are 19,700 vendors in the city. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation received 37 complaints during the survey.

This was revealed at the monthly House meeting of the MC by Mayor Arun Sood.

Giving details of the survey, Sood said the Haryana Nav Yuvak Kala Sangam, which was given the task, would cover the leftover areas in the coming week and also those who were not able to produce their documents to the survey team. All such vendors could submit their documents at the Janj Ghar, Sector 23, where the agency had set up its office, the Mayor said.

MC Joint Commissioner Virender Chaudhary informed the House that during the survey, the civic body received only 37 complaints.

MC Commissioner B Purushartha said since there were only a few complaints, the survey work should be applauded. Earlier, Congress councillor Subhash Chawla raised the issue of anomalies pointed by residents during the survey and demanded a check by MC officials.

The invoice of the vehicles was forged, showing these to be of a lesser value, to pay less registration fee, which runs into several lakhs. The addresses on which the cars were registered were also fake. Four such cases were found in which forged documents were submitted to the RLA to get vehicles registered.

Two BMW cars, a Mercedes and Range Rover SUVs were impounded by the Vigilance Department. During the probe, Vigilance sleuths had found that 142 swanky cars were registered between January and June this year on fake addresses.
