Students for more seats in Kumaon colleges

Students in the Kumaon region have sought more seats in colleges. Amid increasing competition among students, several candidates fail to get admission to the colleges in the region. 

ABVP workers today met Prof KKS Negi, Principal of Government PG College, in Champawat and submitted a memorandum demanding more seats in first year classes at graduation level. Extension of admission date has also been sought. “Students of remote villages in Ladhiya and Quirala valleys, and Tamli and Gumdesh region of the district will not be able to get admissions in case our demand is not met,” said Inder Dhek, former leader of students’ union in the college.

Students in Bageshwar, Champawat, Tanakpur and Pithoragarh colleges have said seats for BA  and BSc should be increased as aspirants with high marks get admission easily while others find no option than to leave for other cities or states. 

Ankur Upadhaya, a leader of the NSUI in Bageshwar, said, “Heavy rush of students is seen at colleges for admissions. Only those, who have 60 per cent marks or above get admission. So we demand 80 more seats in each discipline.”

The situation is worse for students in Pithoragarh where candidates from even Baitari and Darchula districts of Nepal vie for admissions into the postgraduate college. Though admission has been granted to over 1,190 students in BA, 590 in BSc and 150 in BCom, aspirants are still thronging the college for admissions. “We have written  to  the Director Higher Education to increase seats to enable us to accommodate more students,” said  Dr Devraj Singh Pangti, Principal of Laxman Singh Mahar Govt PG College, Pithoragarh.
