Students take out awareness march on Earth Day

Dehradun, April 22

An awareness march was taken out in Dehradun today to celebrate the Earth Day. The march, held under the aegis of Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation, saw keen participation from school children.

Addressing the rally, environmentalist Padam Shri Dr Anil Joshi said air, water and soil were getting polluted at a fast rate which was a threat to the existence of human life. “We need to take this threat very seriously and must pledge to undertake all possible effort to minimise pollution in our vicinity,” he said.

Competitions mark the day

At Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre, a painting and debate competition was organised to make children aware about environmental conservation.

Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) also observed Earth Day. Chief Guest Dr SS Negi, former Director General, Forests, called for sincere efforts towards environment.

Schools do their bit too

At Brooklyn School, children organised a dance and drama programme to spread awareness about environment protection. Marshall School president Rajnish Jayal appealed to children not to use polythene bags as polythene was a major cause of pollution.

Save environment to save earth: Paul

• Governor KK Paul planted saplings of pomegranate and other shade-giving trees at Raj Bhawan on Saturday on the occasion of Earth Day.
• The entire world was concerned about the ill effects of the unbalanced and unchecked exploitation of natural resources. Natural disasters, such as drought and extreme rainfall, were big problems. We must resolve to save the earth from all kinds of pollution and keep it clean and green, Paul stated. 
• He said forest cover must be increased to keep the environment pure. The earth must also be protected from chemicals which pollute and poison the rivers, the Governor added. TNS
