Chandigarh, December 1

Jagtar Singh Tara, one of the accused in the Beant Singh assassination case and the Burail jailbreak, today moved an application in a local court, seeking refund of Rs 27,000 Pakistan currency, seized from him at the time of his arrest.

He pleaded that the amount be given to him in the Indian currency. A Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team official also recorded his statement in the jailbreak case and identified the handwriting of the accused. The matter will be taken up on December 23.

The sensational escape had taken place on the intervening night of January 21 and 22, 2004, when four undertrials- Beant Singh, Paramjit Singh Bheora, Jagar Singh Hawara and Tara- along with their cook Devi Singh, a murder accused, escaped from Barrack No. 7 of the jail by digging a tunnel.
