Chandigarh, December 13

All the four major groups are busy deciding on new faces to field in the upcoming Panjab University Syndicate elections. Sources said of the 15 candidates who will be fighting the elections on behalf of each group, 10 are expected to be fresh faces.

While the four groups — Jain, Goyal, Chatrath and DAV group — are still to finalise their panel for the faculties, only few old faces, including Ashok Goyal and Gopal Krishan Chatrath, are expected to be in the fray.

Sources said there will be no elections for the law, medical, arts and languages faculties, with candidates being elected unanimously. The combined studies and medical sciences faculties, however, will witness a tough fight, they said.

A member of the Chatrath group, talking on the condition of anonymity, said despite a number of meetings to date, the panel could not be finalised, as the number of claimants were much more than the number of seats. The alliances, too, are yet to be finalised, but one thing has been decided that new faces will be fielded on as many seats as possible, said the source. In the forthcoming elections, one of the minor groups which had been supporting the Chatrath group is planning to field its own candidates.

While Goyal group, too, is finalising the names of fresh faces to be fielded in the elections, the Jain group, is busy holding meetings to decide on which seats to fight the elections, before finalising the candidates.
