Two days after a protest by private medical practitioners against the attack at a Rewari hospital and demand for protection money from its owner, another doctor was on Wednesday attacked by unidentified men here.

Dr Shashidhar Shriniwas (46), nephrologist with Artemis Hospital, also owned a clinic. He was attacked outside his house when he returned after attending to patients at his clinic.

The duo waiting for him charged at him the moment he stepped out of his car. They hit him with sticks, leaving him with serious injuries and fractures.

“I parked my car and got down when the two men started beating me up with sticks. They seemed to be waiting for me. Despite my wailing and questioning them, they did not stop. They did not snatch anything and threatened to kill me if I acted brave,” said Dr Shriniwas.

“I am sure that it was not a case of mistaken identity. I think that this was their third attempt. I was followed twice earlier, but I thought that they were some snatchers or car robbers and sped to my house. They have reached my house now and I am scared for my family,” he added.

An FIR was lodged against two unidentified accused. The police were probing whether it was an extortion attempt. “There has not been any ransom call so far. We are probing the matter and have secured CCTV footage,” said a senior police official.
