Karnal, April 14

The Irrigation Department has started flood-prevention measures along the Yamuna. As per the authorities, work has been initiated two months earlier than previous years. The department has allotted a tender for Rs5.5 crore for repair of studs and reconstruction of revetment at four places.

Earlier, the tender was allotted in April and work started in May. Due to this, the work could not be completed on time, leading to loss to farmers on account of floods. This time, the department allotted tenders in February and started work in March.

“The repair of eight studs and construction of 600 feet of revetment is being done at Kalsora complex at a cost of Rs1.25 crore. Three studs will be repaired at a cost of Rs15 lakh at Nabiabad complex,” said Munish Kumar Bhardwaj, XEN, Irrigation and Water Resources.

“Four studs are being repaired and a new one will be constructed along with revetment of 465 feet at a cost of Rs1.75 crore at Jammu Khala. The repair of six studs and revetment of 726 feet is being done at a cost of Rs2.35 crore at Mustfabad complex,” he said.

Ravinder Kumar, SDO, said JCBs and labourers had been pressed into service to complete the work. He said stones were being dumped for strengthening the studs.

Ramesh Mehta, a farmer in Jammu Khala village, said the early start would help complete the work before time. He said the Yamuna posed a major flood threat to more than 30 villages.
