The office of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has asked taxi owners to remove the child-lock feature from their vehicles by July 1.

As per the authorities, the step is being taken to ensure the safety of women while travelling in taxis.

The initiative is being taken by the RTA following the directions of the Transport Commissioner, Haryana, which has asked all secretaries of the authority in the state to ensure the compliance of the order.

In the order, a copy of which is with The Tribune, the Transport Commissioner, Haryana, said, “Vehicle manufacturers provide the child-lock system in cars as an additional feature for the safety of children, but the system, when activated, locks the doors and it may be misused by criminals in case of taxis. The RTA secretaries will ensure compliance of the directions.”

“The step is being initiated to ensure safety of women. We have conveyed the message to all taxi unions,” said Anish Kumar Yadav, ADC-cum-secretary, RTA. “A special drive will be started to remove child lock from cabs,” the secretary said.
