Incessant rain and overflowing drains and rivers have disrupted life in several areas of Kurukshetra. Thousands of acres of paddy and other crops have been submerged and farmers fear that more rain may damage crops.

Thanesar residents said due to poor drainage system, a majority of roads, intersections and crossings had turned into pools of water.

Around 200 families had been affected and 50 families shifted to safer places. Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha and Deputy Commissioner SS Phulia took stock of the situation on Tuesday.

“Directions have been issued to make arrangements for affected families at dharmashalas and community centres. The authorities have been asked to ensure that healthcare services are not affected. Arrangements for food have been made at Kirti Nagar gurdwara,” said Sudha.

The situation was like a nightmare for residents of low-lying areas as water entered their houses, damaging furniture and other belongings. Villagers claimed that the situation had led to fodder scarcity for animals.

“There are no reports of crop damage so far. If the crop remains under water for a longer period, the crop may get damaged,” said Pradeep Meel, Deputy Director, Agriculture, Kurukshetra.

“The situation is under control, but water is increasing continuously. The water level has increased by nearly two feet since the morning. The Saraswati and other drains are overflowing,” said Phulia.

“Food packets and water bottles are being supplied to affected families and they are being shifted to safer places. The district administration is on full alert to deal with any untoward situation,” he added.
