His school did not have any regular science teacher, but that did not come in the way of Deepak Kumar, who topped the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) Class XII examination.

Hailing from a Pur village family  with meagre financial means, the student of Government Senior Secondary School in Bawani Khera village of Bhiwani scored 497 marks out of 500.

A teacher of the same village, Sunil Jangra, who tutored him in English and mathematics, said, “Deepak is the son of a mason. He is sincere about his studies and is also deeply concerned about his family. I have seen him rushing to fields after taking classes to assist in the plucking of cotton. The family has no land and works as farm labourers.”

Deepak’s elder sister Savita, pursuing MCom from Ch Devi Lal University, said her brother wants to study in IIT, “but we neither have the resources to give him coaching for the entrance test, nor can we afford the fee”.

Two of his sisters, Sonu and Seema, are married, Sumitra is pursuing BA through distance education and Sonika is a Class VIII student.

The school said as posts of regular teachers were vacant, temporary arrangements were made. PK Das, Additional Chief Secretary, said, “Vacancies sometimes occur when teachers retire. The school might not have had science teachers for that reason. This time, I am planning to reshuffle teachers in June.”
