Solan, December 14

Officials of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) have recommended closure of two pharmaceutical units for dumping and burning their facility waste in the Sector 2 area of Parwanoo near the HPMC on Friday.

Confirming the news, the board’s Regional Officer, Atul Parmar, said it was an act of disregard for environment norms as the waste bearing labels of these two units — Clevus Life Sciences and Aargee Healthcare — was found dumped in several bags at the site. A recommendation for the closure of such irresponsible units has been sent to the Member Secretary.

Since the site lies in the proximity of a water body, the officials have taken a serious view of the illegal dumping of solid waste. The officials noticed smoke and fire billowing from the site and on examination it was found that these pharmaceutical companies had dumped their bulk waste in violation of the norms.

Parmar said there were three to four such sites where illegal dumping of solid waste was taking place in the town and a letter had been written to the Executive Officer of the local Municipal Committee and the Assistant Commissioner to put an end to the dumping of waste at these sites.

Despite receiving a rebuff from the state High Court, the Municipal Committee has failed to put an end to illegal dumping of solid waste at unauthorised sites in the town and the staff of industrial units exhibit disregard for norms by displaying such irresponsible behaviour.
