Indian Army rescued some 81 tourists who were stranded near Siachen’s Shyok after landslides blocked the road between Pratap Pur and Turtuk villages, a press statement said on Thursday.

The area has been witnessing heavy rain. Groups of tourists visiting Shyok were stranded between Changmar and Bukdang villages.

Troops of the Fire and Fury Corps, a unit of the Leh-based 14 corps, conducted the rescue operation. The stranded tourists were accommodated at an Army post in the area for the night, the press statement said.

The area is one of the coldest in the state, with temperatures sometimes dropping to minus degrees even in June.
