Srinagar, May 20

After functioning without the National Accreditation Assessment Committee (NAAC) certification for three years, the University of Kashmir has been granted A+ rank by the NAAC team after its recent visit to the university.

Established in 1994, NAAC is an organisation that assesses and accredits higher education institutions (HEIs) in India. It is an autonomous body funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The NAAC teams conducted an assessment in the University from May 1 to 4.

The university had applied for the accreditation after 2011 when it was given A rank by the NAAC visiting team. After the NAAC certification was over in 2016, the university did not apply for accreditation, first due to the unrest, and then the administrative failure. It cost the university nearly Rs 100 crore as it could not avail the funds under various Central schemes for failing to have an NAAC certification.

“It means a lot. We are celebrating it. It would help the university on every front like development, teaching and research. The university would also be able to get more grants. We have got score much higher than Delhi University,” said chief proctor Dr Naseer Iqbal. The university has been granted cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of total 3.31.

After working extensively for the NAAC visit, the higher-ups in the university administration were expecting better ranks. The university left no chance to impress the team.

“This year there is a lot of improvement in the university in all aspects of academics,” said a senior official.

The parameters for accreditation by NAAC are curriculum designing and planning, curriculum transaction and evaluation, research development and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, organisation and management and innovative practices.

The University of Kashmir, which is the largest seat of learning in the Valley, was recently given 53rd position among the universities assessed in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2019, besides bagging an overall ranking of 79 in the list of all universities, IITs and other institutions assessed by the MHRD under NIRF.
