Repair work halts traffic at Leh highway

SRINAGAR: Hundreds of travellers, including tourists, were affected due to a heavy traffic jam near Zojila on the 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway on Wednesday.

Hundreds of travellers, including tourists, were affected due to a heavy traffic jam near Zojila on the 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway on Wednesday.

An official in the traffic control department said some repair work was going on the road due to which the movement of vehicles remained slow. He said policemen were on the job to streamline it. An eyewitness said the traffic came to a complete halt when the Border Roads Organisation, which maintains the highway, started some urgent repairs on the road which witnesses rush in the summers.

“The tourists were were caught unawares. The authorities should have informed people in advance,” a local from Leh said. — TNS
