Srinagar, August 20

The J&K Police have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the source and destination of 6,000 litres of diesel and petrol seized in Kupwara district on Saturday.

The police have arrested the truck driver, who was smuggling the fuel, and are looking into the entire chain.

“We will bust the whole module of illegal trade,” said Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Shamsheer Hussain. The police had specific information about the smuggling.

“Based on specific information, the Kralpora police station seized 30 barrels (each containing 200 litres) of diesel/petrol from Chowkibal, Kupwara, while they were being unloaded from a truck,” a police spokesman said.

“The huge consignment of diesel/petrol was being smuggled to be sold in the open market illegally by Zahoor Ahmad Lone of Pangzam, Kralpora in Kupwara, who is also the owner/driver of the truck. He was arrested and the vehicle was seized,” the spokesman said.

The Kupwara police have registered a case. Sources said the SIT was also looking into the possibility that the seized fuel was being smuggled from locals units of security forces. —TNS
