Though a little late, there has been a higher quantity of arrival of maize in the local grain market.

Though the entire procurement depends on private buyers, farmers are reportedly getting a good price for their crop.

District mandi officer Varinder Khera said the highest rate fetched by a maize farmer this time had been Rs 1,750 per quintal, Rs 50 more than the MSP that the farmers had been demanding.

However, the lowest price that the farmers have got for their produce is Rs 1,000 for a quintal, he said.

Though there are reports that even government agencies could buy some maize, so far there has been no such procurement.

The farmers have been seeking subsidies from the state government on a par with Haryana which has recently announced an incentive of Rs 10,000 per hectare to maize farmers growing crop in seven dark-zone blocks of the state.

Mandi officials said nearly 6,000 quintals of maize had arrived in the local grain market so far.
