The district police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of thieves involved in vehicle thefts with the arrest of three persons.
The police also recovered six bikes, four Activa scooters, an LED, an Intex CPU, a scanner and many duplicate certificates, including an affidavit and RC of vehicles, from the accused.
The accused have been identified as Jagiri Ram, alias Kaka, of Sherpur village, Hira Lal of Hoshiarpur and Sandeep Singh of Sherpur village in Hoshiarpur district.
A police team lead by ASI Sukhdev Singh of Division No. 2 got a tip-off that Jagiri Lal and Hira Lal with other were running an inter-district vehicle lifting gang. The police came to know that they steal vehicles, prepare their duplicate documents and sell them to innocent people at good rates.
Acting on the tip-off, the police team laid a trap and arrested Jagiri Lal and Hira Lal from Verka Milk Plant. Both of them were waiting for a person to whom they were about sell a bike and an Activa scooter.
They told the police about their third accomplice Sandeep Singh, who used to prepare fake documents of the vehicles and was helping them by bringing customers. The police arrested Sandeep near the Verka plant.
The police said the accused had stolen these vehicles mainly from Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts.
A case under Sections 379, 411, 420, 465, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Division No. 1 police station.
