To raise the standards of education in government schools, the state government has introduced the English medium in the primary schools. The move has been initiated on the lines of private schools.

To ensure quality education for students in primary schools, the government has issued new guidelines for the primary schools in the state.

It has evinced a mixed response among the teaching community.

A district teacher said, “English is imperative for students’ growth but education in the English medium shall rob students of their right to study in other subjects, especially in their mother tongue. It should be the students’ choice in which language they want to study. The choice of the medium shall remain with the ward not the state.”

Another teacher, however, advocated the move saying, “Private schools are clearly ahead. To ensure learning on par with them while enforcing the English medium is imperative at schools. However, special modules should also be started in Punjabi and the learning of the language does not take a back seat.”

The rest of the guidelines include ensure furniture at primary schools; ensure computers and green board at government primary schools, an award for the best school is very block. Keeping in mind single teacher schools, the rationalisation policy shall address the lack of teachers in various schools.
