Marxist ideas significant in current scenario, says expert

On the 200th birth anniversary of Karl Marx and on the 150th anniversary of the publishing of his legendary treatise Das Kapital, the Revolutionist Marxist Party of India (RMPI) held a seminar at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall on Sunday.

Held on the issue “Marxism’s Eternal Significance,” the congregation for the seminar was headed by Dr Lakhwinder Singh Johal, President, Press Club, Jalandhar and general secretary Punjab Kala Parishad.

Addressing the seminar, Marxist thinker and Dr Ambedkar University, Delhi-based professor Dr Gopalji Pradhan talked about the viability of Marxism in the present capitalist times. He said according to Karl Marx, class struggle was the only potent way to free the human society from all kinds of difficulties.

Stressing that the basis for many of the troubles and dangers posed to the modern capitalist set up lay in the British colonialism, Gopalji said Karl Marx was the potent thinker who saw through this and mobilised the proletariats against this system of slavery as well as gave a call against it.

He hence said the belief that Karl Marx or his ideas were alien to India was rooted in ignorance.

He said Marx’s writings on communism were rendered all the more significant today. Dr Lakhwinder Johal lauded the seminar held by the RMPI stressing such initiatives were necessary.

RMPI general secretary Mangat Ram Pasla acknowledged the presence of scholars and intellectuals at the seminar.
