Jalandhar, January 7

Two days after the cancellation of his vote, former Congress minister Avtar Henry today held a show of strength in his constituency (Jalandhar North) seeking party ticket for his son Avtar Singh Junior (popular as Bawa Henry).

Henry managed a good show at the rally held at his office. Local leaders, including area councilors, spoke in favour of ticket to Bawa, while condemning the cancellation of his vote.

Addressing the gathering, Henry took on both ruling party leaders and the bureaucracy. “My vote has been cancelled at the behest of my rivals. But I will fight back and take up the matter in court to get my vote reissued,” he said.

Seeking ticket for his son, he said: “I hope that the high command will take care of sentiments of people of the area.” Without naming anyone, he even countered party leader Tajinder Bittu, saying: “There are some outsiders who are seeking ticket from this constituency. Akalis attend their family functions and weddings. But I believe that the party won’t repeat old mistakes.”

Father, son namesakes

Avtar Henry and his 35-year-old son are namesakes. “My parents named my son Avtar as they felt that the name is lucky. His full name on records is Avtar Singh Junior, although people coined the name Bawa Henry for him on their own,” says Avtar Henry.
