State-level badminton championship kicks off

PHAGWARA: The Inter-District and Punjab State Senior Badminton Championship 2017 kicked off today at Hotel Cabbana Resorts in Phagwara.

The Inter-District and Punjab State Senior Badminton Championship 2017 kicked off today at Hotel Cabbana Resorts in Phagwara.

The championship is being organised by the Kapurthala District Badminton Association.

More than 200 players from all over Punjab will compete with each other to win the championship.

Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Suresh Kumar inaugurated the tournament. He said today’s youngsters must get the best opportunities and the Punjab Government was duty bound to provide the best opportunities to them.

He said, “Such platform acts as launching pads for the players where they can get the experience of big tournaments.”

The Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister also paid tributes to Ashok Jain, former president of the Kapurthala District Badminton Association.

Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Tayyab was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony.

He said Kapurthala district was feeling honoured to host the state-level championship and would continue to work for the development of sports.

Gurdeep Shira, Pro-Chancellor of GNA University, said they were happy to be associated with the mega event. He said there was a need to provide such opportunities to the youth of Punjab to help them stay away from drugs.

The championship will conclude on September 17. Kapurthala district hosted the championship in 1999 and 2001.
