Those who believe that fashion is what our celebrities are wearing are wrong in many ways. Celebrities merely present what designers make and like any creative person, a designer too looks at society for inspiration. Ask the students of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT)- Mohali, and you will know that fashion is all about creativity and social awareness.

NIIFT is all set to host Anukama 19, the 22nd edition of annual design collection show by its students. K.S Brar, director NIIFT, says “It is a wonderful platform for the budding designers and it imbues in them the necessary confidence to walk shoulder to shoulder with the best in the fashion industry.”

Dr Poonam Aggarwal, principal of NIIFT, says “It is not every day you find motifs and patterns derived from not one but two crafts enlisted in Unesco’s list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Thatheras- The Lost Sound by Kajal and Thangka and Buddhist Chantings by Anusha are noteworthy presentations where both of them learnt about the art to reflect them in their designs.”

Saumya Sharma, one of the students, says “I am delighted to see my principal wearing my ensemble today for the event. She is an inspiration and always encouraged us to bring in creative ideas to the fore. My whole creation revolves around khadi and cotton fabrics and is called Minimalistic Fashion. The idea behind the whole concept is to stylise the Indian wear while keeping it simple. I myself stitched the clothes and used French knots and running stitches. I have worked on the accessories too which are handmade like the clothing line.”

While some ideas were creatively driven, others were cause driven. Sab Rab De Bande by Jagriti is one such cause. She says, “My work includes the third gender in fashion and through the formal wear, I wish to support the transgender community.”

Simardeep Kaur’s creation Wake Up Humans, You Are Endangered Too depicts the melting glaciers and rising water level in her creation. She says, “I am happy with the outcome of my work and I am sure the viewers will clearly get the message I want to convey through my outfits.”

The fashion show by the students will be held in Shivalik Public School, Mohali on May 24.
