A city-based lad Agrim Kapila is making waves in the field of badminton. His performance has been consistent for the last eight years.

A X+II student of the commerce stream at BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Kapila has won medals in singles and doubles categories in the cadet and sub-junior sections in various state-level badminton tournaments.

He bagged silver medal in the boys’ (U-17) singles category in the Punjab State Inter-District Badminton Tournament held at Ludhiana in September, 2017. Prior to this, he clinched silver medals in singles as well as doubles groups in the Open State Championship held at Patiala in 2016.

In 2015, he competed in doubles in the under-15 years category in the Punjab State Badminton Tournament held at Moga where he partnered with Somin Wason from Jalandhar to secure silver medal. In 2014, he paired with local lad Khush Fateh Singh to grab a silver medal.

Kapila took part in the Open National Badminton Championship held at Rohtak in 2014. However, he could not finish among position holders there, but gained experience by playing against the best.

He was also member of the Punjab contingent that participated in the Khelo India at Hyderabad last year. Punjab squad lost in the qualifying round, but its players had useful match exposure.

“My uncle, Dinesh Kapila is my model. He represented Panjab University in the All India Inter-Varsity Badminton Tournament and emerged champion,” said Kapila.

He follows a regular coaching schedule with one hour physical fitness exercise in the morning and one-and-half hour workout at courts on the school premises under the guidance of coach, Anand Tiwari, in the evening.

“I aspire to join the National Defence Academy (NDA), but want to continue with my passion to play badminton and bring fame to my parents as well as the country,” said Kapila.

The Principal of the BCM School, Dr Paramjit Kaur, appreciated Agrim Kapila for bringing laurels to the institution on many occasions. She also lauded him for his astute balancing between studies and game. She wished him success for his endeavors in future.
