Ludhiana, January 10

Keeping in view increasing environmental concerns, the district administration has appealed everyone to adopt renewable sources of energy to meet their energy demands.

The Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Agarwal said this in context of 240 biogas plants which were to set up in the district in the last calendar year through Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA).

The Deputy Commissioner said methane gas emitted from biogas plant is harmless and safe for humans. Using this gas will ultimately reduce the expenditure incurred by the LPG gas and help in the saving the environment from pollution.

For setting up such a plant, Punjab Government offers a subsidy of Rs 5,500 for plants with one cubic metre capacity. The subsidy is Rs 9,000 for general category residents and Rs 11,000 for the SC-ST residents for the plants with a larger capacity ranging between two-six cubic metre for general category residents, he stated.

He said people from rural areas should come forward and get biogas plants installed in their villages. It is a good opportunity for them as the government subsidy would save their money on setting up the plant. It would also save expenses incurred on using other fuels, he said.

High-quality manure can also be prepared from the remaining waste of biogas plant.

District PEDA Manager Anupam Nanda said the state government has also started offering the facility of installing biogas plants in poultry farms as litter by hens can also be used for the biogas plant.
