Ludhiana, July 18

Four days after a youth alleged that two bike-borne men had fired at him in Sector 32, Chandigarh, the police have finally registered an FIR.

The police were earlier suspecting the authenticity of the complaint. However, when the complainant received a life-threatening call, and he submitted its recording to the police, the cops hurriedly registered an FIR against unknown persons.

The complainant is now also filing a writ petition in the High Court against the city police for delaying action on his complaint and to seek security due to life threats.

Subash Katty, uncle of complainant Jasdeep Singh, a resident of Sector 32, said on July 12, his nephew Karambir Singh was attacked by two bike-borne men. However, he did not sustain any injuries. Despite filing a complaint and seeking immediate registration of an FIR, the Jamalpur police did not do so.

“In 2003, I and Jagjit Singh Bittu Chawla, father of Jasdeep, had done a sting operation of around a dozen policemen accepting bribe from lottery operators. Several policemen had been chargesheeted. We filed a writ petition in the High Court to seek a fair probe in the case which is still pending. I suspect that the attack on Karambir could be a repercussion of that, ” Katty, who is the president of the Judge Advocate Pidit Organisation, alleged.

Investigating officer ASI Gurmeet Singh said the police were still verifying the number from which the call was made to the complainant.
