While the state government boasts of promoting Punjab Tourism, the number of downloads for its application reveals a different story.

Not only does the mobile app has around 1,000 downloads, since it was created over two years ago, but it was updated more than a year-and-a-half ago.

Those who downloaded the app say not only does the app needs to be improved and updated regularly, but it needs to be promoted as well.

“While the state government has been making tall promises of coming up with a robust tourism policy, not much has been done in this direction so far,” said Sarabjit, a resident.

“In fact, the weak thrust on the promotion of tourism in the state goes on and it is reflected on the lack of popularity and the Punjab tourism pages on social media as well,” he said.

The popularity of Punjab tourism is lesser as compared to neighbouring states and it is far behind others that have been pushing tourism in their states.

Even the Facebook page of Punjab tourism has around 1,160 likes and 1,200 people follow it. On Twitter, figures, however, fare better with around 3,067 followers.

Meanwhile, there are 77,000 twitter followers for neighbouring Rajasthan Tourism handle, while over 10,000 people have downloaded the app.

Jharkhand has 5,710 followers on Twitter, whereas other states that promote tourism in a big way, have much more impressive figures. Kerala tourism, for instance, has over 1.73 million followers on Twitter and Gujarat tourism as many as 1.7 million followers.

“Punjab has such rich heritage, but the monuments of the state lie derelict. The rich culture of the state needs to be showcased to tourists. Tourism can help not just improve the economy of the state, but is a great way to tell tourists from all over the world about state’s rich heritage and culture. The government needs to thrust the promotion of tourism,” said Amandeep, an avid traveller.
