Ludhiana, April 17

As rain lashed the city on Wednesday, waterlogging was witnessed in several areas, exposing the shoddy work of the civic body and the NHAI. Road gullies in different area were lying choked.

According to information, waterlogging was witnessed near the Diary Complex, Hambran Road, Kitchlu Nagar, Ferozepur Road and various other areas. The residents demanded from the civic body and National Highway Authority of India to ensure timely cleaning of road gullies and storm water drains, respectively.

The work on the elevated road project at Ferozepur Road is underway but water got accumulated at service lanes also, leaving the commuters in lurch. A resident Kuldeep Singh said, “The departments concerned generally ignore cleaning of road gullies and drains. The responsibility of the officials should be fixed to ensure timely cleaning of road gullies to avoid waterlogging.”

Due to the accumulation of trash, logged water had choked the drains along NH1. Even the covers of these storm water drains have broken from various places but not action has been taken in this regard.

MC’s Superintending Engineer Rajinder Singh said there was no complaint of waterlogging on roads. “It was an unseasonal rain but we deployed staff on the main roads to keep check. We would take necessary measures if the road gullies are choked.”

Due to the absence of any proper water sewerage system, water logging has become a common affair in these areas, even after a short spell of rain. Besides, a huge quantity of trash has also gathered in Buddha Nullah, but the civic body is yet to start desilting work.
