The police have arrested three persons, including a proclaimed offender, wanted in murder and robbery cases. The suspects have been identified as Avtar Singh, alias Monu Cheema, of Jogi village in Gurdaspur district; Jagjit Singh, alias Jaggi; and Sarabjit Singh, alias Sajjan, both residents of the Shimlapuri area here. The police have also seized 270-gram heroin, a sharp weapon, six cartridges of .315-bore rifle and a motorcycle.

Avtar was wanted in a murder and two robbery cases registered against him a few years ago. He, along with his two accomplices, was arrested by a team of the anti-narcotics cell at Canal Bridge, Jaspal Bangar village, near here.

He was wanted in a murder case registered against him in Gurdaspur district in 2015. “Avtar murdered a girl in July 2015 and was declared a proclaimed offender by a court in March 2016. He has also confessed to his involvement in a bank robbery reported at Narota Mehra in Pathankot district in July 2018. He was also involved in loot incidents reported in Ludhiana district,” said Commissioner of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill at a press conference here today.

According to the police, Avtar was an active member of Gurpreet Baba’s gang. “Avtar and his accomplices had also robbed a petrol station in the Pathankot area some time back. The police have recovered six cartridges of .315-bore rifle used by the accused in the petrol station robbery,” said Dr Gill.
