LUDHIANA: Burglars struck at two medical shops situated on Chauri Sadak and decamped with cash. Owner of Capital Medical Store Avtar Singh said on Monday evening, he properly locked the store after closing business.

LUDHIANA: Burglars struck at two medical shops situated on Chauri Sadak and decamped with cash.  Owner of Capital Medical Store Avtar Singh said on Monday evening, he properly locked the store after closing business. In the morning, he was shocked to see the shutter broken. The burglars decamped with Rs 25,000 from his store. Meanwhile, burglars stole Rs 7,000 from Malhotra Medical store situated in the same lane. However, they stole no medicine from both stores. TNS

Man held with ganja

Ludhiana: The city police have arrested a drug peddler and recovered 500-gram ganja from him. The accused has been identified as Anup, a resident of Sanjay Gandhi Colony. The police said acting on a tip-off, a naka was laid on Tajpur Road. After intercepting the accused, he was stopped for checking and the drug was recovered. The police have launched further probe in the case.

Drive against pressure horns 

A team comprising the officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board and traffic police carried out a special drive against the use of pressure horns on Tuesday. A total of 43 vehicles were checked, of which six were challaned. Pressure horns were removed on the spot. Notices to violators would be issued separately. The PPCB team comprised Engineer Vicky Bansal, Assistant Environmental Engineer and Engineer Sushil Kumar, Junior Environmental Engineer along with Kashmira Singh, ASI, Traffic Police. 

Class IX girl goes missing

In a mysterious disappearance of a Class IX student, the city police have booked one Babu Ram, a resident of UP. Complainant Ranjit Kumar of Jandiali, told the police that the accused kidnapped his daughter on the pretext of marrying her. The police have launched a manhunt. 

Curbing drug addiction

Dr Inderjeet Dhingra, who runs Dr Kotnis Health and Education Centre, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the government through District Revenue Officer Savita to reconsider the steps taken to curb drug addiction. “The step taken to curb drug addiction are good, but the government needs to reconsider these, so that it does not lead to further complications,” said Dr Dhingra. He said social and religious organisations should be involved in the drive. They should be asked to hold meetings and street plays so that the message could be conveyed to drug addicts and their families. “Through the National AIDS Control Mission, we are distributing syringes to addicts, so that they do not fall prey to communicable diseases. We should try to take addicts out of drugs and not let them fall into a deeper pit,” he said.

Textile conclave on July 13

A state-level textile conclave will be held in Ludhiana on July 13. Industries Minister Sham Sunder Arora will be the chief guest on the occasion, in which businessmen from the entire state, who are associated with apparel and textile industry, will participate.  Director Industries DPS Kharbanda said the department would organise a conclave for the textile and apparel industry for the first time in Punjab. Under this initiative, the industrialists would be made aware about the schemes being run by the Central and state governments for the welfare of the industry. Kharbanda said the problems of the industry would be taken up and solutions provided. Kharbanda said: “We are expecting close to 400 businessmen from different parts of the state and invitation has been extended to them as well. We have already initiated the process for making NIIFT Mohali and Ludhiana as universities and this will be discussed in the conclave as well.” TNS
