New Delhi, September 2

A Delhi court sentenced four people to four years of jail and a businessman to six years in prison on Wednesday in the CWG Street light scams that is estimated to have cost the exchequer Rs 1.4 crore; the first sentencing in the massive scam in the controversial Commonwealth Games of 2010.

Delhi Municipal Corporation superintendent engineer DK Sugan, executive engineer OP Mahla, accountant Raju V and tender clerk Gurcharan Singh got four years for manipulating the tender bid for a contract to light up streets during the Commonwealth Games 2010.

JP Singh, the managing director of the firm that had illegally secured the contract, got six years in jail.

The scam is one of the ten corruption cases registered under the CWG Games of 2010.

All five had been booked for cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

"In this case, allegations proved against the convicts are quite serious in nature. They had conspired together and had cheated the MCD/GNCTD for forging the tender documents, a valuable security, and have also forged the tender opening register," the judge said.

The firm was fined of Rs 70,000. MCD officials must pay Rs 30,000 each, TP Singh must pay Rs 42,000 and JP Singh, Rs 22,000.

The Central Burau of Investigation had claimed that Sweska Powertech was among the companies that applied to secure the tender bid applied for it in 2008.

The Delhi Municipal Commissioner then shortlisted four companies.

The CBI claimed that certain alterations were illegally made to the figures the firm had originally offered, ensuring that the firm clinched the deal.

The court had earlier called Sugan the prime conspirator, claiming that the tenders were unsealed in his office on May 14, 2008.

However, it discharged Philips India official Mehul Karnik after noting that the company did not submit a bid. — PTI
