New Delhi: The IIT Council on Tuesday approved admission of non-resident students to increase the intake of students in the premier engineering institutes to one lakh by 2020. The present intake at the IITs is 10,500 at undergraduate level, 8,000 for post-graduate seats and 3,000 PhD scholars. The different IITs will now undertake an exercise to assess the additional number of students they will be able to accommodate. The IIT Council meeting, chaired by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, on Tuesday also approved the Prime Minister’s research fellowship to encourage IIT students to research in India. “We will provide grants, facilities and fellowships to students,” said Javadekar after the IIT Council meeting. “There will be no overregulation in higher education sector,” he said.
