Abohar, April 30

At Gumjal, the village where veteran parliamentarian late Balram Jakhar, CM Captain Amarinder Singh and PPCC president Sunil Jakhar have sounded the bugle for farmers’ stirs on different occasions, non-governmental organisations on Monday launched a “cancer-free water” campaign.

The village is a part of Abohar subdivision and is located near the Punjab-Rajasthan border. Some children and women from the neighbouring Sadhuwali village of Sriganganagar also joined the protest march.

The residents of this tail-end village were shocked to find that water released in canals in Abohar irrigation division after a three-week-long closure was black in colour, stinking and unfit for irrigation.

The participants carried placards highlighting the role of contaminated water in spreading cancer in at least four districts of the Malwa region in Punjab and eight districts in Rajasthan. Children walked silently with placards while others carried torches and candles. — OC
