Local Congress MLA Dr Dharamveer Agnihotri today met shopkeepers who were fined for encroaching upon roads and markets of the town and assured them that the fine would be returned to them.

In the wake of heavy traffic, the district administration had launched a drive to remove the encroachments from the footpaths two days ago.

Assistant Commissioner Rajnish Kumar Arora led the drive with the help of the officials of the local Municipal Council (MC) and other departments.

Fine was imposed on as many as 40 shopkeepers, who were also issued receipts under “Tehi-Bazari”.

The move of the administration created resentment among residents of the town. To pacify them, Agnihotri along with his workers visited the shopkeepers and assured return of fine. The shopkeepers said they have handed over the receipts to the MLA.

The district administration stopped the drive today and no one came to remove the encroachments.

However, Arora said the fine received could not be returned at any cost. The local MC authorities have deposited the amount in the account today, said an MC official.
