Inspector Gurmeet Singh has been suspended for sharing an indecent video featuring a minor girl and three boys on the social media.

This video clip was purportedly shared to justify an act of “moral policing” by this inspector in January at Jaito town. The alleged moral policing had led to agitation by students and farmers, eventually leading to the death of two policemen, including DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu and his gunman.

While Gurmeet feigned ignorance on sharing the video, which showed a girl in school uniform in a compromising position with a boy and another filming it, Faridkot SSP Dr Nanak Singh said an inquiry had been initiated in this regard.

Being the SHO of the Jaito police station, Gurmeet Singh on January 12 had allegedly picked up three students — two boys and a girl — from the bus stand for creating nuisance on the road. The students were allegedly taken to the police station and thrashed badly.

By uploading the video, Gurmeet sought to justify his January 12 act of thrashing the trio. Using unparliamentary language in his messages in a Whatsapp group, which has many police officers as its members, Gurmeet said he was just reprimanding such elements, but was punished unnecessarily.

Earlier, an investigation had proved him guilty of negligence and dereliction of duty in maintaining law and order in Jaito town. He was sent to the Civil Lines.
