Bathinda, May 16

A day after four farmers committed suicide owing to debt in the district, a farm labourer in the Maur area ended his life by jumping in front of a train on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Gurdev Singh (75) of Maur Charat Singh village. He was under a debt of Rs 4 lakh, which he had borrowed from various villagers for his daily expenses and he was not able to repay it.

Station House Officer of the GRP police station said the police were recording statements of his relatives.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) district president Shingara Singh Mann said the increase in the number of suicides by farmers and labourers was due to anti-farmer polices of the Centre and the state government.

Shingara Singh Mann said instead of providing basic facilities to farmers, governments were giving farm lands to corporate houses.

Shingara Singh Mann appealed to farmers that they should stop committing suicides and instead join any organisation of farmers to fight for good policies.
