Hundreds of people today bid a tearful adieu to Charanjit who was shot dead by militants in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday evening.

Fazilka Deputy Commissioner Manpreet Singh Chhatwal conveyed Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s condolence message to the bereaved family, and also laid a wreath on the pyre. Senior police officials and legislator Arun Narang (BJP) also laid wreaths on the pyre.

The family said Charanjit (40) worked for fruit traders and did not own any business.

An inconsolable Nareeti (37), wife of Charanjit, requested the police officials to take revenge on the militants who had killed her life partner a day before Karva Chauth.

Meanwhile, Chhatwal said the state government had sanctioned Rs 2-lakh financial assistance to Nareeti and he would request the government to increase the amount.

The DC said Sanjiv Charaya (23), who worked with his uncle Surinder Charaya and was also shot at by the militants in Shopian, was responding to treatment in Srinagar. The state government has sanctioned Rs 1-lakh assistance to his family.

The BJP MLA said the Punjab Government should bring the family of the deceased in the ambit of “Terrorism-affected families”, enhance financial assistance up to Rs 10 lakh and arrange a suitable job for Charanjit’s widow besides providing free education to his minor son.
