Anand draws again; held by Wesley So

St. Louis (USA): Viswanathan Anand’s hunt for an elusive victory continued as the five-time world champion failed to break the solid defences of Wesley So of the USA in the seventh round of the Sinquefield Cup. With his fifth draw in five games, Anand inched a little forward adding another half-a-point, but that did not reflect in the tournament standings as the Indian remained on joint eighth position with just two rounds to go in the $300000 prize money competition. Levon Aronian of Armenia demolished American Hikaru Nakamura to shoot into sole lead on five points out of a possible seven. Magnus Carlsen of Norway ended up on the losing side against Russian Alexander Grischuk.

Manoj, Madan in quarters of Asian boxing

Manoj Kumar (64kg) sailed into the quarterfinals with an easy win as Indian boxers continued their good show in the Asian Championships. Manoj (in pic) defeated Nepal’s Deepak Shrestha 3-0, while Madan Lal (52kg) got the better of Iraq’s Murtadha Al-Sudani by the same margin. With this, seven Indians have made it to the quarterfinals. L Devendro Singh (49kg), Shiva Thapa (56kg), Vikas Krishan (75kg), Manpreet Singh (+91kg) and Satish Kumar (91kg) have already booked their last-eight berths.

Wrestler Monu won a bronze medal in the 46kg freestyle category to help India finish their campaign with three medals, including a gold and a silver at the World Cadet Championship. India finished fifth in the men’s freestyle competitions by securing 37 points. Earlier, Anil (gold) and Ankus (silver) had bagged the medals.
