Raising a New Army in India

IT will be remembered that the 'Times' comments of Mr. Churchill's suggestion to raise a new and large army in India was that there was little prospect for it in the present condition. Indirectly this means there is no enthusiasm in India and unless there was spontaneous fervor among the people the thing was not worth having. We quite agree with this opinion, but we deny that Indians are in any way lacking in patriotism provided that the restraints placed upon their enthusiasm are removed. Indians are quite as strong in their determination that the war of liberty should be waged to a complete success and they are prepared to do all they can in this noble attempt. The French Government have created enthusiasm among French Indians, and as Mr. Churchill observed, cannot England do what France has done? The Times has neatly evaded this point, but casts doubt on Indian fervor.
