The decay of Jains in India

THE question of the gradual decay of Jains in India should be studied carefully and certain social re-arrangements should be introduced.

THE question of the gradual decay of Jains in India should be studied carefully and certain social re-arrangements should be introduced. A writer discusses the subject in the "Leader" of Saturday, the 24th instant, and points out how the Jains have been decreasing in population, though they form a trading class not subject  to the effects of famines as the agriculturists. He invites attention to the large percentage of single men and single women in the community who are precluded from marrying on account of the subcastes and the rules of Gotra which exclude many a desirable match. The Parsess have already appointed a committee to enquire into the causes of social and other defects of the community and in the same way, the Jains of India, and the Hindus of the Punjab should appoint special committees to investigate the cause of the decay of population.
