Bathinda, December 13

The Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) has prepared an estimate to desilt the existing sewers and repair manholes at the Industrial Growth Centre at an estimated cost of Rs 25.18 lakh.

The MCB has planned to table the proposed estimate in the coming General House meeting of the MCB and the work would commence after a nod is received.

The industrialists were demanding the cleaning of sewers for long. They regretted that due to choked sewers, it would get very difficult to drive on most of the roads in the industrial area.

The industrialists added that defunct pipes have not been replaced for the last decade. In the absence of a storm sewer system, the movement on the road comes to a complete standstill due to excessive waterlogging.

One can see water accumulated on roads for weeks with the authorities turning a blind eye to a major issue. As a result, the roads were bearing the brunt.

Raman Watts, president, Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Bathinda, said, “Successive governments have cited fund shortage or some other reasons. If the desilting work has started, then it is a good move and we welcome this step.”

He stated that roads at the Industrial Growth Centre were in poor condition and should be repaired. “We have submitted demands on several occasions but the government did not pay heed despite generating revenue from the industrial units,” he said.

The issue has been highlighted earlier in these columns as the industrialists were demanding that the sewers be cleaned.
